We are the largest and most diverse employer in West Dorset with over 3,000 staff providing an acute hospital service to a population of over 250,000.

Our Mission is to provide outstanding care for people in ways which matter to them and to achieve this we ensure our values of Integrity, Respect, Teamwork and Excellence is at the core of everything we do.

Outstanding Location

West Dorset with its outstanding scenery and rugged coastline is characterised by a number of small towns, each with a distinct identity. The coastline is protected by World Heritage as a site of outstanding natural beauty.

Dorchester is an intriguing mix of historic and the modern, with the new Brewery Square development offering a vibrant and sophisticated leisure and shopping complex.

The local schools are amongst the best in the country with a mix of public and private education.

The hospital is close to the town centre of Dorchester, and has excellent bus and rail networks, making the major centres of Bournemouth, Bath, Southampton, Exeter and Bristol easily accessible

Outstanding Career

Dorset County Hospital has an exciting opportunity to join our award-winning Pharmacy team. We are looking for an ambitious, highly motivated and dynamic pharmacist who is looking to develop their knowledge and skills in clinical pharmacy and progress their career.  You may be a current pre-registration pharmacist, a newly qualified pharmacist or looking for a new challenge in your career.

You will work in a supportive environment with excellent training and development opportunities.   We run regular education sessions, which all our pharmacists are encouraged to participate in.  We support continuing professional development and we offer the opportunity to undertake the post-graduate clinical diploma.  We also encourage and support our pharmacists to undertake the non-medical prescribing Programme.

You will work alongside a variety of clinical and technical staff and will have support from our experienced team of pharmacists and medicines management technicians. You will obtain experience in a variety of pharmacy services and the current rotations, each lasting four months, will include:

  • Acute medicine
  • General medicine (including cardiology and respiratory services)
  • Medicine for Older People
  • Surgery (emergency and elective)
  • Aseptics and cancer services
  • Paediatrics
  • Renal Services
  • Critical Care

The Pharmacy department at Dorset County Hospital is forward thinking and we pride ourselves on the excellent pharmaceutical care we provide for our patients. We have a decentralised service whereby TTOs are dispensed on the wards, which has improved our turnaround times and aids patient flow. We also have robotic dispensing and electronic prescribing. We are looking forward to upgrading our robot in the near future, which will include redesign and refurbishment of our dispensary

The post is full time (37.5 hours/week) and will include on-call, weekend working, late shifts and participation in the bank holiday rota. We look forward to receiving applications from enthusiastic and innovative pharmacists and pre-registration pharmacists.
