We are delighted to offer the opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join our hard working and dedicated team as a Consultant in Emergency Medicine. This is a new post. Applicants should hold the Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and a CCT in Emergency Medicine or be within six months of award. An interest in acute medicine is desirable, but not essential. We enjoy an excellent working relationship with our colleagues in acute medicine and it is anticipated that this appointment will enable an even more integrated and rewarding approach to managing the “Front Door”.
The Emergency Department currently manages approximately 48,000 patients per year. Of late we have consistently been one of the highest performing hospitals in the country against the 4-hour emergency access standard. We currently benefit from a full complement of specialty doctors, who provide comprehensive 24/7 cover for our service.
The department is proactive in the management of critical illness, and major trauma, which is consultant led. The EM Consultants support the 24/7 stroke thrombolysis rota with Physician colleagues. Primary PCI is offered by our cardiologists in hours as part of the pan Dorset Network Service.
Dorset County is a trauma unit in the Wessex Major Trauma Network. The geographical location of the hospital is such that the ambulance services rarely bypass our unit in favour of the Major Trauma Centre. The onsite helipad receives patients from the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance and the HM Coastguard Search & Rescue Service.
The anticipated fixed weekly-programmed activities of the new appointee are 10PA’s and an on call commitment of 1 in 6 with internal cover. This is recognised in annualised consultant job plans, and working life is regarded by the consultant team as both rewarding and sustainable.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide excellent clinical leadership as well as to deliver an excellent standard of direct clinical care. Teaching and training is delivered within the department and in a dedicated Education Centre which has its own sim-suite. We actively encourage all staff to participate in audit, research and teaching.
