MACMILLAN COLORECTAL CANCER NURSE SPECIALIST
22.5 HOURS A WEEK (permanent)
We are looking for dedicated, motivated and enthusiastic registered nurse to join the Colorectal Team at Dorset County Hospital. This is a great opportunity to develop your specialist skills in a beautiful part of the country.
We are a proactive Colorectal Team who were a pilot site for the National Cancer Survivorship Initiative (NCSI). Supported self-management pathways and the cancer recovery package are in place for patients following colorectal cancer treatment. The successful individual work with our current CNS to manage a number of nurse led clinics including remote monitoring, nurse led follow up, treatment summary and care planning clinics. They will support the Nurse Consultant in the providing a telephone assessment service for new colorectal referrals and experience of telephone nursing/clinics and a broad knowledge of gastrointestinal disease are essential.
We are a team of 5 Colorectal Surgeons, Colorectal Nurse Consultant, Colorectal Cancer CNSs, Macmillan Cancer Support worker and stoma care nurses. The ethos of our Unit is to minimise the stress of colorectal cancer surgery through minimally invasive techniques and post-operative enhanced recovery programmes.
We are a bowel cancer screening centre and our new cancer centre is due to open this year. This will expand our chemotherapy unit and enable patients to receive radiotherapy treatment onsite.
The role will include working as a core member of the colorectal multi-disciplinary team, having active involvement in the referral, investigation, treatment and follow-up of patients with malignant colorectal disease. As key worker you will coordinate care pathways and provide specialist psychological support and symptom management for patients.
Although the post is based in surgery the role will include collaborative working with our oncology, chemotherapy and palliative care teams. Applicants will be expected to have relevant post-registration experience of colorectal surgery or oncology nursing with evidence of effective leadership and the ability to work independently. Excellent communication skills and an understanding of cancer standards, peer review and the key worker role are essential.
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
